Berusande känsla
Christopher Hitchens memoarer Hitch 22 är mycket roande läsning
och särskilt om den tid på 60- och 70-tal då Hitchens kallade sig
själv trotskist. En av de stora debatterna i modern tid är den mellan
Galloway och Hitchens där två stora retoriker pucklar på varandra
och Galloway är inte sen att använda trotskistargumentet på Hit-
chens när denne försvarar USAs intervention av Irak (Kolla).
I boken skriver Hitchens:
-Through this and other experiences I began to discern one of the
elements of an education: get as to the supposed masters and
commanders as you can and see what stuff the really are made
of. As I watched famous scholars and professors flounder here
and there, I also, in my career as a speaker at the Oxford Union,
had the chance to meet senior ministers and parliamentarians
"up close" and dine with them as well as drink with them after-
ward ,and be amazed once again at how ignorant and some
times plain stupid were the people who claim to run the country.
This was an essential stage of my formation and one for which
I am hugely grateful , though i fear I must have made me much
more insufferably cocky and sure of myself than I deserved to be.
A consciousness of rectitude can be a terrible thing ,and in those
days I didn´t just think I was right:I thought that we were being
damn well prove right.If you never yourself had the experince of
feeling thatyou are yoked to the great steem engine of history,
then allow me to inform you that the conviction is a very intoxi-
cating one .
Jag känner igen hans minnen. När jag var ung och ansåg mig
vara en del av den rätta ideologin vilket inte bara stakade ut
framtiden vetenskapligt utan också hade alla svaren på nuet
och historien. Övertygelsen gjorde att jag i princip inte kunde
förlora några diskussioner då jag hade rätten på min sida och
inte behövde lyssna till annat(även om jag alltid tyckt det varit
mycket roligare att läsa av och om mina "fiender").
